Reducing the environmental impacts of the production of melamine etherified resin fibre

Conventional plastic products present a serious burden to the environment, especially during their end-of-life phase. To tackle rapid growth in production, use and pollution, it is desirable produce materials more sustainably. Amongst these which could be produced sustainably are Melamine Etherified Resin (MER) fibres, have wide range of potential uses, such as mobility, filtrations, for thermal protective clothing other applications. This paper explores sustainable MER fibre where all required feedstocks from either renewable or waste origin. investigate pathways, conventional process compared two alternatives processes utilize CO2 wood-based methanol formalin production. A comparative environmental impact assessment conducted, selected footprints, impacts eco-costs analysed based on 1 kg fibres. Results show that greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint reduced by over 68% human toxicity 75%, while up 44%. Moreover, results first step towards producing fibres way, contributing circular economy.
